The science, made simple

How cannabis works in the body

Your body already has a system built to respond to cannabinoids. Understanding it is the first step to deciding with confidence.

Endo-cannabinoid system
CB1Nervous system
CB2Immune cells
Endo- cannabinoidsMessengers
  1. How it works

    The endocannabinoid system

A network of receptors (CB1 and CB2) and natural messengers like anandamide your body uses to keep balance: pain, sleep, mood, appetite, and inflammation.

  2. How it helps

    Cannabinoids that modulate signals

THC and CBD interact with those receptors. Research suggests they may turn down certain signals (like pain or tension) rather than simply masking them.

  3. Why it helps

    It supports the body's balance

Because it works with a system already inside you, many patients use it alongside their medical care to feel steadier day to day.

How we compare

Puerto Rico vs the mainland

Most mainland states have no visitor pathway at all, so a visitor cannot buy legally there. Puerto Rico issues a 30-day permit to qualifying visitors.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the process.

How long does the process take?
30-day tourist permits are approved in 15 to 60 minutes. Annual resident licenses are processed in 7 to 28 days, depending on the Puerto Rico Department of Health. The application itself takes about 5 minutes.
What documents do I need?
A valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, or REAL ID), proof of Puerto Rico residence (for resident licenses only), and any medical records related to your qualifying condition. If you don't have records, our doctor can evaluate you during the review.
Is medical cannabis legal in Puerto Rico?
Yes. Medical cannabis is fully legal in Puerto Rico under Law 42-2017. The program has been operating since 2017 and is one of the most established in the United States.
What if I'm declined?
If the certifying physician determines you don't meet the qualifying criteria, you'll receive an explanation by email. You're welcome to consult with your own physician about next steps or reapply with additional documentation.
Am I eligible as a tourist?
If you're a US citizen visiting Puerto Rico and have a qualifying medical condition, you can apply for a 30-day tourist permit. The process is completely online. You don't need to be on the island to apply.
Is a temporary medical card the same as the tourist permit?
Yes, they are the same document. The 30-day permit for US-citizen visitors is often searched for as a temporary medical card or temporary medical marijuana card. Officially it is a temporary medical cannabis permit issued by the Puerto Rico Department of Health under Law 42-2017, and it is valid for 30 days from approval.
Is a medical marijuana card the same as a medical cannabis card?
Yes. Puerto Rico law and the Department of Health use the word cannabis, while medical marijuana card is the more common term on the US mainland. Both names refer to the same official card, and the application process is identical either way.
Can I use my card at any dispensary?
Yes. The official card issued by the Puerto Rico Department of Health is accepted at licensed cannabis dispensaries across Puerto Rico.
How do I renew my license?
Renewal is even simpler than the first application. We'll email you a reminder before your license expires; renew online in about 5 minutes.

About MedCardPR

MedCardPR is operated by AZ Capital Holdings LLC. We are an online application, coordination, and referral service that helps Puerto Rico residents and visitors complete the process of applying for a medical cannabis card or tourist permit.

Our service includes intake collection, document collection, payment for administrative services, telehealth scheduling coordination with an independent PR-licensed physician's office, and application support through the Puerto Rico process.

We are not a healthcare provider, dispensary, pharmacy, marketplace, or delivery service. We do not sell, ship, dispense, or distribute cannabis, THC, CBD, or any physical cannabis product. The physician conducts the evaluation independently and makes all clinical decisions. The official card or permit is issued by the Puerto Rico Department of Health, not by MedCardPR.
