Can I prepare my application before I arrive?
Have your travel dates, identification, and medical information ready before your trip. The application asks whether you are already in Puerto Rico. Answer accurately and contact support if you need help with timing; do not assume that the permit starts on your arrival date.
Who is eligible for a Puerto Rico visitor permit?
US-citizen visitors with a qualifying medical condition recognized under Act 42-2017 are eligible. Puerto Rico residency is not required, and there's no local-address requirement. An independent Puerto Rico-licensed physician evaluates your qualifying condition during the online application and makes all clinical decisions; MedCardPR does not.
How much does it cost?
It's a flat $99.99 all-in for the 30-day permit. That total already includes Puerto Rico tax and government processing fees, with no hidden add-ons and no recurring subscription. You pay once, and the price you see is the price you pay for the application, coordination, and permit fees combined.
How long does it take?
The online application takes about five minutes. After payment, an independent Puerto Rico-licensed physician reviews it. Most tourist permits are reviewed within the hour. The approved 30-day permit is emailed to you. Additional documents and official processing can extend the timeline.
What ID and documents do I need?
MedCardPR’s visitor application currently serves U.S. citizens and accepts a passport or U.S. state driver’s license for identity verification. A driver’s license alone is not proof of citizenship. Provide accurate eligibility information; the physician may request further documentation.
Does my mainland US medical card work in Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico’s Health Department includes qualifying nonresident medical cardholders under its rules. Acceptance depends on meeting current requirements; confirm your documents with the Department and the licensed dispensary before travel.
Where can I buy, and where is use restricted?
An approved permit lets you purchase at licensed Puerto Rico dispensaries. Use, however, is tightly restricted: public consumption is prohibited, including beaches, public spaces, and vehicles, and most hotels and rentals have their own rules. Follow dispensary guidance, property rules, and local law; recreational use is illegal in Puerto Rico.

Once your permit is emailed, you can purchase at licensed dispensaries within the 30-day window. Use is still subject to public-consumption restrictions and local law.
Is recreational use allowed if I have a permit?
